The Great Wall

Tourists flock from all over the world to visit the Great Wall of China, probably the most iconic symbol of the country and an awe-inspiring feat of ancient defensive architecture. One of the ‘new’ Seven Wonders of the World, its winding paths take in some of the best views of the country.

The Great Wall is almost inconceivably long, crossing nine Chinese provinces, so you may wish to consider which section you want to visit. The most well-visited are within just a couple of hours travel of Beijing, including the excellently preserved ‘Badaling’ section – which is also the easiest to explore, and wheelchair friendly. Some of the best views come from ‘Jiankou’, but this is also the most difficult to scale and more suitable for strong hikers. ‘Simatai’ offers a close alternative, and is a little easier to walk.

Tip: Most travellers visit the closest sections to Beijing, the easiest to reach, but therefore they are also the most crowded. To avoid the throngs, and for the chance of a Great Wall night experience, consider staying in nearby Simatai. Once ranked #1 in a list of ‘World’s Top 25 Scenic Spots’ by the Times newspaper, it also offers a cable-car over the mountain slopes to aid accessibility and provide an alternative view.
