Prague

Capital of the Czech Republic, the ‘City of a hundred spires’ has a medieval vibe that wouldn’t be out of place in a fairy tale. But with a wild history, an eclectic culture, and an easy-going ambience, there’s so much more to do in Prague than simply marvel at the old buildings.

First on most tourists lists is a walk across the historic Charles Bridge, with stunning views of the city over the Vltava River (climb the Old Town tower for even better views). Try and cross this off your list early in the day, as it gets crowded from about 9am. Better yet, a night sampling the city’s crazy beer halls may see you crossing the bridge at sunrise on your way home. It’ll be virtually empty! Head to the 9th century Prague Castle, then truly step back in time by walking the Mala Strana neighbourhood. Grab a pint of some of the world’s best beer, before ambling the maze of cobbled lanes and courtyards. At night, creepy gothic shadows spill the streets and gives a whole different vibe to the city.

Often described as Disneyland for grown ups (though we love a bit of Disney too, if we’re honest), Prague has a millennium of history, the beauty of a storybook land, and is the well-preserved gem of Europe. What’s not to love?
