Home to the shipyards that built the Titanic, Belfast has a proud connection to its maritime past that is evident throughout the city. As is evidence of its more recent history too, with numerous murals and the Peace Wall cutting a striking image through a city still coming to terms with ‘The Troubles’ – locals put on guided tours in some of the more affected areas if you wish to learn more. Head to the Ulster Museum to explore some amazing collections, including the city’s connection to Game of Thrones (there are multiple filming locations nearby), then take some well-deserved down time strolling the thriving Botanic Gardens in which it’s set. Once you’ve worked up an appetite, you’ll have no shortage of food options, from street markets to fine dining, and the drinking scene is renowned – the Cathedral Quarter is where you’ll find many bars and restaurants.
