Ecuador
A small country on the west coast of South America, most travellers visit for one thing; the Galapagos Islands. These extraordinary islands, filled with uniquely evolved wildlife, helped Charles Darwin prove his theory of evolution. Yet, with its breath-taking rocky peaks and enthralling people, there are so many more surprises waiting for visitors to this inspiring destination.
The islands are a three hour flight from mainland Ecuador, however, so you’ll be wanting other reasons to visit too, and capital Quito is a good place to start. Step from one side of the equator to the other as you pass through this picturesque colonial city. Banos is the destination of choice for adrenaline-junkies, offering white-water rafting, bungee jumps, and the ‘Swing at the end of the world’. Rock lovers head to the active Cotopaxi volcano, deep in the Andean mountains, or Lake Quilotoa, beautiful waters within this former volcano. Those looking for relaxed culture head to Cuenca and its national parks.
Still ignored by mass tourism, for the most part (unlike neighbouring Peru), Ecuador is a stunning place to visit for those looking for something a bit different. Vast, unique, and more than just its famous wildlife-filled islands, head there whilst its still under the radar.
